Best conditions for coffee cultivation

Hello, I’m Prunella from “Le Piantagioni del Caffè” and today I will tell you about the
necessary conditions for the proper growth of coffee plants in the countries of origin.

Plants need temperatures always higher than zero in order to grow. So the temperature must never go below 0°C and moreover, the places where the coffee grows must not have excessive temperature changes during the year.
Arabica prefers a temperature between 18°C and 22°C. Whereas Robusta can also tolerate a temperature of 28°C.
As for humidity, it has to be there because it reduces the transpiration from leaves.
But it must not be extreme otherwise it would compromise the coffee quality in the cup.
As for rain, it is also necessary for proper growth so much so that most of the water the plants need comes during the rainy seasons. There are few plantations mechanically
irrigated and they are usually located in rich countries such as Brazil.
However, rain must not be uninterrupted during the year.
To get a correct flowering and drupes production, the rainy season has to stop otherwise, even in this case, the coffee quality in the cup would be affected.
And lastly, sunlight. Coffee plants are heliophobic by nature.
They hate light, but we know sunlight is necessary for the flowering of any plant. A semi-shade condition is optimal for growth.
That is where the plant can enjoy the sun rays but, at the same time, it is protected by the shade of trees which reduces the thermal excursion risk (too much heat or cold).
