Best climate for coffee cultivation
Hello, I’m Prunella from “Le Piantagioni del Caffè” and I’m going to talk generally about the climate suitable for growing coffee plants.
Coffee plants grow in intertropical countries and they need a fairly mild climate.
What does it mean?
Temperatures must never go down below zero. And, above all, the diurnal temperature variation must never be excessive because coffee plants can’t stand it.
In Brazil, there was a “Great Frost” which was a big issue for the Brazilian market because it destroyed many plants. A strong frost came and all plants were forced to endure temperatures below zero.
The ideal temperature for high-quality Arabica is between 18°C and 22°C. And plants can’t bear a diurnal temperature variation higher than 19°C.
As for Robusta, the ideal temperature goes from 22°C to 28°C, but the plants can bear a temperature variation of 14°C maximum.
As for water, in most cases it comes from the rain. Robusta needs much more water during the year than Arabica.
In both cases, the rainy season must end by the flowering and harvesting periods to avoid unwanted effects in the cup when we taste it.
