Role of altitude and latitude in coffee growth
Hi, I’m Prunella from “Le Piantagioni del Caffè” and I will explain
the role of altitude and latitude.
All coffee, both arabica and robusta, is produced in the intertropical band, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
This is because the diurnal temperature variation is not excessive in the countries located there.
And, above all, the difference between the four seasons is not as sharp as in the countries not belonging to this belt.
As for altitude, we know that high-level arabica grows at higher altitudes
than average commercial arabica.
We also know that robusta, another botanical species, grows at much lower altitudes than arabica.
To make an example. Indian robusta grows at an altitude between 500 and 1000 meters above sea level.
Whereas Ethiopian arabica – which is opposite both for the botanical species and for the quality level – grows on average between 1400 and 2400 meters above sea level.
