What is coffee?
Hello, I am Prunella from “Le Piantagioni del Caffè” and in this video I will explain in general what coffee is.
It is a shrub, a plant, from the Coffea genus that includes about 120 species.
The most popular are arabica and robusta.
They are both from Africa: the former from Ethiopia and the latter from Guinea and Congo.
Both arabica and robusta bloom two years after the birth of the plant.
Their flower is white and very fragrant.
After three years, the plant bears fruits that are called drupes.
Inside the drupes there are two seeds. Those raw and green seeds that we well know roasted.
All coffee plants have a maximum lifespan of 80 years, but in full production they can live up just
to 30 years!
