The Mexican coffee estates

Mexico has an important coffee heritage because it was introduced by Spanish settlers in the late 1700s.

Mexico is the 12 th coffee exporter of the world.
Most of its production is made of commercial-grade washed arabica (lately the country has also increased its specialty coffee production) coming from the following regions: Veracruz, Chiapas, Puebla and Oaxaca.

Typica, Caturra and Bourbon were the most commonly grown varieties until 2015, during which a national program for the renewal of coffee plantations began and many farms began to cultivate improved varieties.

A great coffee from Mexico

Despite this coffee for Mexico is not as important as it is for the neihboring countries (it represents less than 0.1% of the exports’ value) and avarage yields per hectare is lower thant its neighbors.

Nevertheless 2019 was the year when Mexico decided to rejoin PROMECAFE, a platform supporting coffee agricultural research.

Typical harvest time goes from November to March.
